Goals
“If you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there.†- Brian tracy
In grade school, you might remember writing about what you want to be when your grow up. I remember writing “I want to be an astronaut.â€
Three decades after, my goals have grown. I have them written down and I am determined to make each of them come true. Going to space is still in that list.
Do you have goals in life? I’m sure you do. But do you have them written down? Some estimates say that 97% of people do not have written goals. Out your goals in ink ! Write them and review them regularly.
I used to hold my goals in my head. Over the years, I can vaguely remember some of them. Only a few remained. Only when I have written them down was I able to tell myself that I have achieved some of my goals.
According to Brian Tracy, there should be three aspects to your goals:
WHAT: This aspect deals with your business, career and financial goals. What business would you like to put up? What do you want to achieve? Examples would be achieving yearly sales of $10 million in real estate or internet business. Career goals usually involve promotions or choice positions while financial goals may be having $1 million in the bank, earning interest monthly.
WHY: This aspect asks why you have your WHAT. What are your goals for? You want to have more money so you can provide your family a comfortable life. You want your business to flourish to be able to buy that dream house you and your spouse have been dreaming of. You want financial freedom to serve full time in the church. The WHYs are usually about you and your family.
Problems arise when you are caught up with the what and forget the why. You might know of the very driven person who is at the peak of his career yet his family life is in shambles. He lost focus on why he works so hard.
HOW: The how aspect deals with the steps or processes on achieving your dreams. HOW do you achieve the WHAT in order to know the WHY. These are you personal and professional development goals. In order to establish a business, you might want to learn how to build a business plan or developing the habit of reading more about your ares of expertise. Learning Project Planning and imbibing a cusomer-oriented philosophy is the way to go, especially the service industry.`
There were times I’ve asked people what they want in life. Especially with young people, it is quite sad to hear: “I don’t know.†Sadder still if you hear it from the not-so-young.
To find your major definite purpose, ask yourself “What would you do differently if you didn’t have money cares.†I am no talking about just spending money and going on pleasure trips and cruises. What would you be doing if money was not a concern? Will you be writing children’s stories, teaching or researching a cure for cancer?
Write your own life story. What would be your achievements? How do you define success in your own terms? One similar option is to write your own eulogy, how you’d like to be remembered and what legacy will you leave.
Ask your self this question: What would you attempt, what one thing would you dare if you knew you could not fail.
Answering any of these questions will surely bring you to your major definite purpose.
Once you know your goals, you are already halfway to achieving them.
